Year 4 Sex and Relationship Education Meeting for Parents

Dear Parents and Carers,

As part of our Sex and Relationships education, the children in Year 4 will be re-capping learning from Year 3. We shall be looking at the life stages for humans as they change from a baby to an adult.

The main focus in Year 4 is on puberty and how people change during this stage in their life. We will focus on the differences that males and females go through. We will also learn some basic facts about reproduction and pregnancy, and learn the correct names for all parts of the body.

The children will also be thinking about their relationships with families and friends and the benefits of positive, caring relationships but understanding that sometimes these relationships can change.

If you would like more information on what the children will be learning, we will be holding a parent information session where we will explain the aspects of the ‘Sex and Relationships’ curriculum we will be teaching and looking at the resources too.

This will take place on Thursday 14th July at 2.15pm.

Please email the school office if you are able to attend on office@harbour.e-sussex.sch.uk

Yours sincerely,

Catarina Granville and Holly Bishop

A huge well done to all of the parents that attended our 'Performance Learning' session for parents of children in Year 4 and Year 6. They did a great job! See below...

Dear Parents and Carers,

Have you heard of Whatsapp, Kik and Snapchat?

How about Chat Roulette or Omegle?

Do you know how to adjust privacy settings on Facebook?

Do you know how to enable filtering on your home router?

If the answer to any of the above questions is ‘No’, or you’d just like to know more about keeping your children safe online, then please come along to one of our Internet Safety events led by Mr. Steven Geering (our Network Manager) and I. The events will share with you what we already do in school, and give you advice on what you can do at home.  PARENT and CHILD P4C

     (Philosophy for Children)

                   Sessions

    26th November1.45pm and 6.00pm

Dear Parents and Carers,

Would you like your child to have the opportunity to further develop these skills:

  • learn to think before they speak and give reasons for what they say

  • value their views and the views of others

  • not take things personally

  • learn respect and negotiation

  • learn not to be fearful

The good news is that at Harbour we’re working hard to do this. Last year we started doing ‘P4C’ with all our children from Nursery to Year 6. P4C stands for Philosophy for Children.

Perhaps you’re surprised that alongside teaching your children to read, learn their times tables and deliver all the other subjects, we’re also teaching your children philosophy.

Lots of research has been done to show how teaching children to debate philosophical questions helps to develop their listening skills, thinking skills, their vocabulary and their reasoning powers. Not only that, children really like it! It’s fun.

Every term, your children do at least one philosophical enquiry. The sessions usually start with warm-up games to get the children thinking and start decision making, and then through negotiation and voting, a ‘juicy’ question is chosen for the main debate.

These are some of the juicy questions we have debated…..

Should we always follow rules?

Does money make you happy?

Is it ever right to steal?

Is it ever right to keep animals in captivity?

You can imagine we have very lively and passionate debates about these questions!

We know that lots of you want to be really involved with your child’s learning, so we are running two parent and child P4C sessions.

The session will be led by Jane Branson, an independent consultant who has worked with us for a number of years. Mrs. Jackson will be working alongside Jane. We are also being joined by an author called Sarah Bee who has written the book we will be using as the stimulus for the session.

Because the session is for you to enjoy alongside your child, we have a limited number of places. We have room for 12 families at the 1.45pm session and then another 12 families at the 6.00pm session.

If you would like to come along to the session with your child, please email back to the Office. Including the following information:

Name of child doing the P4C session:

Name of parent/carers doing the P4C session:

Which session would you like to come along to: 1.45pm or 6.00pm

We have really enjoyed introducing the children to P4C and we can already see it has had a very positive affect on the children’s vocabulary use and their thinking and reasoning skills. Now we’re very excited about giving you the opportunity to do some philosophy alongside your child.

Places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis, so we will contact you by email if you and your child have been given a place.

Many thanks,

Dear Parents and Carers,

Anti-Bullying Meeting Tuesday 17th November - 9.00am

As advertised in our Newsletter and on our website we are hosting a parent’s anti-bullying information workshop on Tuesday 17th November - which is in National Anti-Bullying week. This will be led by a member of the Educational Support, Behaviour and Attendance Service (ESBAS) and members of school staff.

ESBAS support our school to offer a range of proven approaches for providing targeted support for vulnerable children and their families affected by friendship problems and bullying behaviour; with clear positive outcomes being achieved.

We recognise that some parents have clicked ‘I don’t know’ in answer to the question about bullying in Parent View (the Ofsted questionnaire) and we want you to feel better informed about;

  • What exactly bullying is, and to participate in discussion and agreement around its definition

  • What the roles and responsibilities of the school, Governors, parents and children are

  • What proactive strategies the school employs

  • What reactive strategies are used

  • What Cyber bullying is and how can this be overcome

There will be opportunities for questions during the session. It is national anti-bullying week and the children will be engaged in activities during the week around this theme.

Please email the office if you are able to attend, so that we have an idea about numbers.

We are limited on the availability of ESBAS staff and so are only able to offer the one session, apologies and we hope that some of you are able to start work late so that you can join us!

ASSESSMENT and the NEW CURRICULUM

Dear Parents  and Carers,

You are invited to attend a meeting on Tuesday 10th November at either 1.45pm or 6.00pm to learn about the new curriculum and how we are now assessing it. We are no longer using 'levels' as many of you will be aware and have seen in the press.

Please do make every effort to attend one of these sessions - we have so much to tell you!

October 19th 2015

Dear Parents of Year 4 and Year 6 children,

PL Education and Harbour Primary and Nursery School

We are delighted to announce that Harbour Primary and Nursery School has become a partnership school with Performance Learning® (PL) Education Limited in delivering the PL Curriculum to your child. The PL Curriculum is taught alongside the school curriculum to help raise your child’s performance in their education.

The foundation of Performance Learning Education is made up of four elements: Memory, Sleep and Wellbeing, Time-Management and Self-Leadership. These elements are taught and practised, through a series of lessons.

The first step in PL Education’s partnership with Harbour Primary and Nursery School was for your child to conduct a short computer based questionnaire, which we call PLOA (Performance Learning Online Analysis). The PLOA Primary Analysis consists of the following categories:

Category 1: Their sleep and energy. This analyses how the learner sleeps, their energy both in school and at home, as well as how they feel.

Category 2: Their classwork. This looks at their classwork, areas such as maths, writing, listening, speaking and memory.

Category 3: Their goals. This gives the learner the chance to tell us about their goals and what they want to achieve most in class and in school

Following on from completing PLOA, learners will be placed in specific groups based on its outcomes and your child will participate in one PL lesson a week. They will be supported by our PL Manual, along with weekly home based exercises.

An important part of the Performance Learning® process is parent involvement. We provide you with a PL Parent Guide and conduct a series of parent meetings in conjunction with your school. We would be grateful if you could attend so that together we can help your son or daughter reach their full potential.

DATE OF MEETING - Wednesday November 4th 2015                                    TIME 1.45 or 6.00pm

We very much look forward to working with both you.

Kind Regards,

Your Team at PL Education

Dear Year 6 Parents

As the children's SATs tests approach in May, we know that like us, you want your child to do the best they can. The children are working very hard in school, but we know that our children do best when school and home work together.

We'd like to invite you to a parent's workshop on Monday 19th January at either 1.45pm or 6.00pm. We'll go through exactly what the Maths tests will involve as well as things you could do at home to help your child do as well as they can and go into the tests feeling confident. There will also be an opportunity to order revision guides if you wish to do so.

We want this to be a really well attended meeting, so please choose the time that works best for you and hopefully we'll see you all for tea, cake and maths on the 19th.

28th November 2014

 Dear Parents and Carers,

As one of the many ways we support the children’s learning, some children in Year 2 will be having ‘more able’ support once a week for Maths. If this affects your child you will have a letter from me about this!

Your child will be working with other more able children from across Year 2, focusing mostly on problem solving and reasoning skills. They will be using all the knowledge they are learning in Year 2 and applying it in different ways.

I’m sure that lots of you will be curious what we do in our sessions, so I’d like to invite you to a parent’s session. We’ll do the kinds of activities I use with the children and it will also give you the opportunity to ask me any questions you might have. The parent’s session will be on

Friday 5th December 9.00am-10.00am

Many thanks,   Lyn White,  Deputy Head.

Reception Phonics

Dear Parents and Carers,

Following our Reception Reading meeting last term and your feedback from these, I would like to offer you the opportunity to come into school for a two hour phonics session on Thursday 27th November from 9.00am – 11.00am.

During this session you will further develop your understanding of phonics and we will be explaining how we teach Phonics at school and how this plays a vital part in your child’s reading development, during Foundation Stage and in the years to come. Research has shown that children’s reading progress is helped greatly when they read regularly at home. Phonics is a Key Skill to learning and those parents who support this skill at home give their children a fantastic start in this area of development.

This phonics session will take place in the Foundation Stage small hall.  If you would like to attend this session please complete the reply slip below.  Please do be aware that younger siblings will not be able to attend due the length of time and focus of the session.

We do recognize that this meeting is during the working day and would be happy to organize an evening meeting if there is sufficient demand.  If you would prefer to come in the evening, please let us know and we will arrange a date in due course.

I look forward to seeing you there

Yours Sincerely

PARENTS “TIPS” MEETING

As parents we are aware that bringing up your children is both a joy and a challenge.  21 years as parents has certainly given us both plenty of both. Several years ago some friends shared some helpful ‘tips’ with us that really helped us both as parents make a stronger heart to heart connection with our own children. They were simple principles but very effective and since that time we have had opportunities to share them with others who have, from their feedback to us, also found them helpful in their own different situations. The main principles are understanding a child’s emotional needs, how these affect their behavior and how you can meet these needs, identifying a child’s love language and how to make strong connections with them by understanding and entering ‘their world’. Harbour Primary has us given the opportunity to share a bit more about these principles with any parents, grandparents or carers who are interested. This is not an academic course or someone telling you how to raise your children but just two parents, who have made mistakes, sharing some things that they have found helpful in their own lives.

The sessions will be held at the school on 20th November and 27th November 9am – 12pm these sessions are for adults only.

Yours sincerely

Supporting the whole school community to have a positive understanding of transgender issues

We want all the children in our school to feel safe and be happy, and for our families to feel informed about how to effectively support transgender and gender questioning by their children, preventing any transphobia at our school.

For this reason we would really like to invite you to an information sharing meeting:

at 2.30pm on Friday 17th October 2014 in the school hall

The meeting will be led by Ryan Gingell from All Sorts whose role includes supporting schools and families in the local area with transgender questions. We hope that by organising this meeting we can allay any concerns that our families may have about transgender children accessing facilities and the curriculum according to their gender identity rather than their biological sex.

We aim to have a culture and whole school environment here at Harbour that celebrates difference and diversity and one in which all children can see themselves reflected and valued. Please do come along and find out how you can help us to achieve this aim.

Dear Parents

NURTURE GROUP – PARENT WORKSHOP AND ACTIVITY

During Term 6, the Nurture group will be piloting some activities that focus on developing mindfulness practice with support from Jo Charlton who is an Educational Psychologist with the LEA.  We have planned to do this on three consecutive Tuesdays, the 24th June, 1st July and 8 July, between 11:30 -12:00. Studies have shown that looking at mindfulness has positive effects on emotional and social qualities in both adults and children.  For example the ability to feel calm and in control of one’s emotions, to make meaningful relationships, to accept experience without denying the facts, to manage difficult feelings, to be resilient, compassionate and empathic.  It is also linked with education, improving academic learning and performance.

The aim of this pilot is to help the children develop their attention skills in the classroom.  The children will take part in daily short activities in the classroom to encourage them to notice and understand what is happening around them and to learn how they can help themselves to feel steady and calm.

We will also be running a Parent Workshop on 16 July between 13:45 and 15:00 in the Nurture room.  We warmly invite you to come and we can all learn some new skills together.  Please make every effort to attend as this will be hugely beneficial.  We shall provide refreshments and use this as a time to connect and catch up.  We have timed this to end promptly so you may collect your children after the meeting as normal.

Dear Parents and Carers,

PARENT FORUM

Would you like to make a difference at Harbour Primary?

We would like to invite you to come along to our next parent forum meeting.  As Governors one of our main priorities is to listen to and understand your views.  When parents are involved in their child’s learning and in the life of the school, children do better.  This is borne out by a growing body of research.  Parental involvement is thus a key lever for school improvement. Schools which work in a genuine partnership with parents have found that this can have a transformational effect on school culture by strengthening the feelings of ownership and commitment of the local community.

We will be holding our next meetings at Church Hill on:

Tuesday 20th May 2014 starting at 2pm or 6pm

 This meeting will focus on:

The organisation of the school day in September 2014

Please don’t think that as your child is at Western Road at the moment your views are not important, we will be all together in September 2014!  You are welcome to attend at either time, however, the meetings will not be suitable for children to attend.

 Looking forward to seeing you.

We all need good maths skills, whether it’s to record our favourite programme, decide how much
paint to buy for that decorating job, work out our weekly shopping, or help o ur children with their
homework. Whether you love maths, or are slightly fearful of it, the more you know, the more you
can support your child with their maths learning.

To help you help your child, I’m going to be running some parent sessions, so you will know how
we teach your children to work mentally, how they do their written calculations and how you can
further help them at home. Please have a look at the sign-up sheet attached so you can decide
which session is best for you. Hopefully you’ll be able to come to them all.

The sessions will be:

Tuesday 18th March 1.45-2.55 Addition
Tuesday 25th March 1.45-2.55 Subtraction
Tuesday 1st April 1.45-2.55 Multiplication
Tuesday 22nd April 1.45-2.55 Division
Tuesday 29th April 1.45-2.55 Problem Solving and Algebra

I hope lots of you will be able to come along, enjoy the cake and the Maths!

Many thanks,
Lyn White
Deputy Head

Understanding how your children learn is a key ingredient of our “KEEPING UP WITH THE CHILDREN” course.  With the help of tea/coffee and biscuits you will learn about how we teach reading in school and supporting your child with phonics and spelling patterns, grammar and punctuation.  Find out how we use Numicon, how we teach calculating and problem solving, and about using computers and iPads in the classroom.  We will all be playing games using the equipment that your children use at school!!
